These traditional style jumpers were developed to provide warmth and protection in harsh Atlantic conditions, eventually gaining international fame in the 1950s and 1960s through export. They generally feature a combination of stitches to create an iconic mix of pattern and texture.  They are now instantly recognisable and The Aran jumper is synonymous with Irish knitwear.
